Vapotherm's COPD symptom tracking app used a clinically validated algorithm to anticipate dangerous flare-ups — but only worked if patients actually showed up every day. The product served a predominantly elderly population, many managing a serious chronic illness largely on their own.

Problem
The existing app was a bare-bones ten-step questionnaire with no continuity — once patients submitted their responses, that data disappeared. With no visibility into their history, no sense of progress, and a confusing interface, there was little reason for patients to keep coming back.
Solution
I redesigned Vapotherm’s symptom-tracking experience to prioritize clarity, consistency, and motivation. The new flow reduced cognitive and interaction load by simplifying daily check-ins, clearly communicating progress, and surfacing symptom trends in a way that felt understandable and relevant to patients.
